The (updated) oracle conundrum for v2 🔮✨
In our quest to shape the blueprint for oracles and v2, last month we made public some of our extensive research into the oracle landscape. 🔮
The feedback we received from our vibrant community and the different oracle providers was not only enlightening, but very helpful in refining our understanding of oracles. This iterative learning process has been invaluable, and we hope to have the same collaborative spirit for all future topics related to v2!
Thus, we have taken the initiative to re-articulate our learnings, ensuring that the insights we have learnt can help contribute to the understanding of oracles within DeFi in general.
Before we dive in, a couple of reminders: this is internal research that we’re making public, rather than a definitive oracle rating system - and our vision for v2 is to build a protocol that is as immutable as can be.
Here's a recap of our collective insights on the infographic, and an updated look at things:
/LiquityProtocol/status/1702377038185734582/photo/1 Admin control / Controlling entity
No changes here - @WeAreTellor and @Uniswap are the only two we looked at that truly have no ‘admin’ control. Admin control in this instance refers to a controlling entity that has the ability to modify or upgrade that particular oracle.
👇
Compatibility with immutable dApps
After speaking with different oracle teams on the matter, we came to a conclusion that fully immutable oracles are the only ones which can be determined as 'green', while oracles that follow a proxy architecture are not the same. Why, you ask? ⬇️
Proxy oracle contracts introduce potential risks due to their upgrade capacity. Most proxy oracle architectures have the ability to completely replace the oracle logic, and could (for example) block specific protocols from accessing vital price feeds based on the identity of the requesting protocol or the type of data request. The mere presence of such control is a concern - hence the change of the color code of any oracles with a proxy architecture to yellow.
👇
Attack costs and “cost to controlling entity”
One great example of a learning from the iterative process taken with the different oracle providers was to split the crypto economic guarantees into two components: a) attack costs, and b) what the controlling entity has at stake. “Attack costs” refers to the economic cost of compromising the oracle’s security, e.g. a malicious actor gaining control over the price feed.
The “cost to controlling entity” column refers to what a governing entity “has to lose” by manipulating, censoring or suddenly deleting the oracle.
For the IC exchange rate canister specifically, we learned that it is now in fact heavily integrated into the core IC ecosystem, and that 'messing' with the oracle would pretty much undermine the ICP network as a whole. On top of that, it is also the only oracle we looked at that has a legitimate decentralized governance mechanism (voting-based).
Despite this, our research still points to the notion that there isn’t any one oracle which combines complete trustlessness with reasonably low latency.
👇
Latency
The only change here is that we learned that the IC exchange rate canister has a worst-case latency of ~1 minute due to historical data granularity - although there is potential for sub-second latency if their outcall functionality were extended to allow for medianization of the latest spot price.
We would also like to clarify our stance on the track record tab of the infographic - our track record criteria specifically refers to the track record of the oracle provider on Mainnet
In closing, this exploration was enriched by the proactive participation and feedback of our community and the various oracle teams. Collectively, these learnings help set the stage for our v2 journey, ensuring that it's founded on a collaborative spirit.

new hire alert 🔔🚨
We are delighted to announce that @colingplatt will be supporting our launch of 'v2' as the Head of Product.
Colin has a strong financial background and has been active in the DeFi space since its inception. He has advised several projects from startups to established players, and played a pivotal early role with the likes of Qredo and Sora. He ventured into crypto in 2013, where he led the crypto team at BNP Paribas Global Markets. In 2016, he helped create a derivatives clearing platform for the London Stock Exchange.
Prior to joining Liquity, he worked as an independent consultant within NFTs and DeFi, and led smart contract development for the Alto NFT Marketplace.
We are convinced that Colin’s interesting blend of having a traditional finance background, DeFi expertise, and tech knowledge makes him the ideal person to help shape and launch our v2 product.

August recap 📅
Who said August was just for vacations? 😎
Here's a quick wrap-up of the Liquity extravaganza this month! 👇🧵
ATH in Troves

bull market 🐂 or bear market 🐻, Liquity doesn't care.
Liquity dances to its own tune 🎵, when the beat of solid fundamentals are there.
In August, an ATH on the number of open troves was reached (1309) 🏆
An amazing display of trust from DeFi users.🙏
👇
LUSD as a DAO treasury asset 🏅
$LUSD is making its mark as a favorite DAO treasury stablecoin to hold.
/LiquityProtocol/status/1697275931121893659/photo/2
In August, the likes of @gearboxprotocol , @silofinance , and @BaoFinance all hopped on the decentralization bandwagon, and diversified their treasuries adding the with the most decentralized stablecoin around.
Who's next?
👇
LUSD proliferation on layer 2's continues
While Liquity's immutable nature means it will always remain a permanent resident of the Ethereum mainnet, guess what?
You can now spot bridged LUSD vacationing on @0xMantle and soon, @0xPolygon zk🏖️.
👇
LUSD as a collateral asset on @AaveAave
$LUSD is officially rocking as a collateral asset on @aaveaave with a unanimous "YAE" from the community. 🤘
/LiquityProtocol/status/1697275931121893659/photo/3
Needless to say, the demand for LUSD as a collateral has been impressive 👀
👇
On/offramp LUSD in Mexico 🇲🇽
@0xsuarmi have integrated LUSD on and offramps into MXN pesos and vice versa across Ethereum, @optimismFND , and @arbitrum .
This marks the first on/offramp venue for LUSD in the LATAM region.

⚡Last but not least, $LUSD has been added to the DeFi powerhouse @PolynomialFi on @optimismFND

/LiquityProtocol/status/1691480138708324352/photo/1 Oracles in DeFi
In the DeFi universe, smart contracts make the rules, executing transactions based on data.
But where does this data come from? How do smart contracts gather real-world, off-chain information?
This is where oracles flex their muscles, connecting the on-chain, and off-chain worlds.
A post on some of the approaches taken in the industry, and how it ties into choosing the right oracle for Liquity v2 🧵
The three pillars of modern oracles: Push-based, Low-latency, and TWAP
1) Push-based oracles (eg: @chainlink ):
Push-based oracles follow a simple mechanism where they regularly "push" price data on-chain at specific intervals, or at various deviation thresholds.
@chainlink is a well-known example of a push-based oracle. At predetermined time intervals, or if the price of a said asset deviates by more than 0.5% since the last update, Chainlink 'pushes' the latest market price data to the blockchain.
Chainlink uses a decentralized network of nodes to collect and feed data to smart contracts; this proxy architecture also ensures smooth upgrades. However, push-based oracles don’t come without any tradeoffs.
Chainlink's reputation-based system, where only whitelisted nodes contribute data, guarantees the accuracy and security of the feed, but also raises questions on decentralization.
There might also be occasional delays in updating price data, leading to potential latency issues (eg., if the ETH price moves by 0.49%, there won’t be a trigger for an update, and it might update after 1 hour).
2. Low-latency / pull-based oracles (eg: low-latency Chainlink, @redstone_defi , @PythNetwork )
As the name suggests, low-latency oracles promise near-instantaneous data updates. These oracles require keepers or users to first pull the price, and then send the price data to the dAPP as part of the transaction the user wants to perform.
For products requiring real-time data, low-latency oracles are a godsend. Sub-second updates can be crucial in volatile markets, or for specific financial instruments (eg., derivatives, margin trading, etc). The reduced chances of lag also reduce arbitrage opportunities within the protocol.
While offering quick data retrieval, low-latency oracles can complicate the user experience due to their pull-based approach (especially when it comes to the front-end experience, and composability).
Furthermore, elements of centralization in these oracles also raise concerns about their 'true' decentralization.
3. Time-Weighted Average Price oracles (eg: @Uniswap v3)
TWAP oracles, like Uniswap v3, offer a moving average of an asset’s price over a specified period. The inherent design of TWAP oracles, relying on liquidity depth, ensures market prices are consistent and protected from short-term manipulation or extreme volatility.
However, price lags, and liquidity guarantees are a concern. By their very nature, TWAPs don’t give real-time prices, but an average. This time lag, especially in rapidly changing markets, might lead to less optimal executions.
There is also the case of liquidity guarantees; what happens if LP's pull their liquidity away from Uniswap v3 to v4, and an immutable protocol opts for a TWAP oracle that is based on Uniswap v3?
So with all this being considered, what’s our criteria in choosing the right oracle for v2?
In the next post, we'll delve into Liquity v2 and its oracle objectives, outlining the challenges that come with choosing the right oracle.
